Tax on gasoline

Would increasing the gas pollution tax be a good thing for our society? People would say it would be a good thing, since the money gained from increasing the tax could help the environment and fix roads."The results could only be beneficial: for the nation’s roads, bridges and transit systems, which badly need repair; for the budget; and, to the extent that higher taxes encourage greater fuel efficiency, for the climate" (nytimes.com, June. 10, 2015). If the gas pollution tax was raised it would help gain more money for our society, and could help with our environment. If people don't want to pay a little more extra tax they could always buy a Hybrid and save money overtime.

Even though there are benefits to raising the gas pollution tax, there are also some disadvantages to it. There are a lot of arguments made about raising the gas pollution tax, about how it would be a problem for people in the middle class."It’s estimated that a 1 percent increase in gas prices takes $1 billion out of consumers’ pockets. That’s $1 billion dollars that could be spent on eating out, clothes, and leisure activities" (atr.org, May. 29, 2015). Increasing gas pollution tax would have benefits, but would make it much harder for people to afford gas. Especially for those who are in the middle class or lower.

Even though that increasing gas pollution tax would definitely help our environment, I don't think it should be raised. There are definitely a lot of benefits to raising gas pollution tax, but the disadvantages outweigh the benefits. It would be too hard for people in middle class or lower to pay for gas, which they need to go to work. The gas companies like Diesel, would probably have a decrease of sales because of the increase of the gas pollution tax. I think that we should wait to increase the tax when our economy is at a better state than it is now.
